It's best to start with items you use least that will be stored in your new home. Having assessed your new storage space, you will want to purchase clear-sided or decorative bins that will fit that space and pack directly into them. Plan to store things as close as possible to where they will actually be used. Frequently used items should be easily accessible. Be sure to mark each storage container with the room and storage area where it will go.
For items packed just for the duration of the move, use sturdy boxes of matching size so they can be stacked. Reinforce the bottom of each box with extra packing tape. Never fill a box so heavily that you can't lift it safely. Label the room it will go to on two sides and be sure that whoever is doing the moving, professional or friendly helper, knows the boxes are to go directly to those rooms.
Use bubble wrap or unprinted newsprint, available at moving supply stores, to wrap dishes and other fragile items. Especially if others are helping you pack, use color coded boxes or bags so there can be no confusion between trash, what is being moved, or what is being donated.
Use a shredder to dispose of documents with sensitive information and protect yourself from identity theft or fraud. If you are disposing of 40 years of tax returns or bank statements, you can use professional paper shredding services listed in the phone book or online. Small valuables such as jewelry should go to a safe deposit box until you have moved. Be sure to leave your new contact information with your Realtor or the new owner.
Pack a special box or suitcase with essentials and you may need the first night and take it with you in your car. It should have any medications you need, toiletries, toilet paper and paper towels, bottled water, snacks and a change of clothes for the next day, in case you arrive too late or are too tired to unpack the first day.

We recently did our annual hose testing at the fire station and as usual we ended up with a number of lengths of hose that didn't pass because of leaks or whatever. So before it was all tossed out I grabbed a roll of 3" hose and brought it home thinking there has to be some use left in it. So I cut a piece length ways, removed the outer jacket and layed it down in a couple drawers. There is still a small ridge from the hose being folded up but I suspect that will go away over time. Suppose I could try pressing it out somehow too.
