CHATHAM - Volunteers from the Animal Protective League greeted customers at Ace Hardware in Chatham Sunday, Aug. 7, with an announcement – it’s kitten season.

In conjunction with Ace Hardware, the APL has been setting up pet adoptions every other weekend at the Chatham location.

“We have lots of kittens right now,” said Chatham resident Lisa Brubaker, who has been volunteering with the APL for six years. “Most kittens are born in the spring and during the months of July and August, they’re ready to be adopted after they have reached 10 to 12-weeks-old.”

Among many kittens awaiting adoption Sunday were Apricot, a three-month-old male, and Gwenivere, a 14-month-old tortoiseshell female.

“Gwenivere came in with an injured eye in July,” Brubaker said. “She’s fine now. She is as healthy as can be and still has a nice, long life ahead of her. ”

APL kittens like Apricot and Gwenivere have been microchipped and have had their shots updated. The kittens have also been spayed and neutered at the APL’s Spay/Neuter Clinic.

“We have a qualified medical staff at APL, so you know you are getting healthy pets,” Brubaker said.

Medical staff at the spay/neuter clinic perform 30 or more surgeries a day according to the APL’s website .

“The spay/neuter clinic has been open for about six years,” Brubaker said. “Since the clinic has opened, it has definitely helped decrease the number of animals in the area that are euthanized.”

Volunteer Denise Simon said the APL wanted to broaden its adoption locations to area communities like Chatham to provide residents with an easy avenue for pet adoption.

“We wanted to come out to Chatham as much as possible to let residents know what animals are currently in need of adoption at the APL,” Simon said.

“The more pet adoption locations we have, the more likely we could get our animals shown and adopted.”

Chatham’s Ace Hardware assistant manager Chris Hill says the business began the pet adoptions at Springfield’s Wabash location and has since expanded the pet program to area locations like Chatham.

“It is a way for us to connect with the community,” Hill said.

“The APL is usually here every other weekend,” he said. “To those interested in attending pet adoptions in Chatham, the APL’s Facebook page   has updated listings of pet adoption sites, including our location.
