Buying a Classic Car

There are many reasons why people choose to buy classic cars rather than models fresh from the production line, beyond a mere desire to impress other road users. Tried-and-tested vehicles that offer more economical insurance, maintenance and repair deals can be less of a strain on a driver’s wallet than brand new cars. Buying a used model can also mean you pay a lot less up-front – as long as you are cautious at every stage of the deal. Classic cars come in all shapes and sizes, not just the open-top sports cars that graced cinema screens in the 60s and 70s. If you have a family or require a more practical vehicle with greater interior space, a better alternative could be a four-door saloon from a respected manufacturer, such as Austin or Morris, which can be cheap to buy as well as to run. A little more difficult to track down, but well worth the effort if you require even more space, is buying an estate version of a preferred model – however, the relative scarcity of these vehicles could mean you need to pay more. Beyond the practicalities of size – which is an important consideration, especially if you’re hoping to fit a wide 50s Cadillac into your garage – is the era and style of vehicle you would prefer. Those looking for a classic British car could find the Rover P4 model an ideal starting point when buying a classic car, as its wooden and leather interior really harks back to the golden era of British motoring. Even if you can’t afford cars from premium manufacturers, such as Rolls Royce or Jaguar, settling for classic cars made by Humber or Daimler could be just the thing; as long as the vehicle is in good condition. Whenever you’re buying a used car, it’s important to check the condition is up to scratch, as the money you’d have to pay to bring a battered model up to roadworthy standards – involving everything from simple car screen repair to refurbishing the interior – could prove to be a significant investment. There are further benefits to buying a classic car that are not as widely known, but could see more car buyers turning to vintage models in the coming years. These include zero road tax, for cars made before 1973, and better insurance deals, which can prove much lower than for new models. There are also environmental benefits to opting for a used car rather than a new model, considering that around one third of the energy a car consumes during its lifespan is used to manufacture it in the first place.
