Drowned kayaker was doctor at St. Francis
A Lawrence man who drowned Friday while kayaking along the Kansas River near Topeka's water treatment plant was a physician at St. Francis Health Center.
A city official late Friday identified the victim as 36-year-old Ryan L. Moore.
On Saturday, hospital officials confirmed Moore was a medical doctor at St. Francis. Robert Erickson, president and CEO of St. Francis, issued this statement:
“It is a shocking, tragic and sad day as we lose a very special part of our St. Francis family. He was truly a talented, caring, ‘rising star’ in our organization. To our staff and patients, he was someone who always put others first and was a true collaborator and team member.”
Police officers and firefighters were sent at 2:03 p.m. Friday to a boat ramp at 1201 N.W. Warren.
Employees at the city's water treatment facility, which is on the south side of the river, saw a person kayaking near the intake to the plant. They later saw the kayak tumbling in the water below the notch in a weir in the river.
Emergency response personnel found Moore's body in the water about 300 yards downstream from the weir near the city's water treatment facility.
According to St. Francis' website, Moore was a hospitalist at the facility. Moore was certified in internal medicine and pediatrics. He went to medical school at The University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed his residency at KU medical center.

Work to start on lot at Second, St. Francis | Wichita Eagle
Work to start on lot at Second, St. Francis 0 comments BY RICK PLUMLEE The Wichita Eagle
Work that county and city officials hope will bring St. Francis and Second back to life is about to begin.
OK, maybe your idea of life isn't a concrete parking lot. But that's only part of the plan for the southeast corner just west of Old Town.
Construction will start this month on a 287-space concrete parking lot on the site of the former Coleman Co. manufacturing plant. The site also will include an urban park.
Work is expected to be completed by early December, said Ron Holt, Sedgwick County assistant manager.
The county is spending $2.1 million to build two parking lots at Second and St. Francis and will own both lots. The other will be an asphalt-paved lot with 175 spaces on the northeast corner.
The private sector is kicking in $350,000 for the lot on the southeast corner.
The Downtown Rotary Club announced in March it would put up $300,000 to build the park, which will front the lot and commemorate the group's 100th anniversary. The park will include the Rotary Time Tower, a working sculpture that will move with the wind and mark time by producing sound every 15 minutes.
The Coleman Co. is contributing $50,000. Bricks salvaged from the old building will be in the masonry work, and the company's former arches will be part of the landscape.
"Rather than having a vanilla,
yellow-striped parking lot, this brings in a historic significance," County Commissioner Tim Norton said.
But the county's cost has jumped considerably from a year ago, when the commission approved $600,000 to buy the old Coleman building.
That was the only firm figure Holt had. He estimated at the time that demolition and disposing of asbestos would be $300,000 and construction would cost $600,000.
But demolition was an additional $200,000. Construction jumped $400,000, bringing the price tag to $2.1 million.
Before the county commission approved the increased cost last week on a 4-1 vote, Holt told the commissioners a design hadn't been established last August and the estimate was based only on cost per parking space.
One of the changes made was to go from an asphalt surface to concrete, which increased the cost $200,000. Concrete was necessary because of the slope of the land and the need to put a better cap on the surface, Holt said.
The ground beneath the former building is contaminated by industrial solvents, city and county officials have said.
