Sometimes I’m tempted to break trust and actually listen to a record before I review it. Like this one. But that’s not the point. The point is that you can judge an album by its cover. Even if you shouldn’t. Can we all just marvel at the fantastic undying combination of purple and red for a minute?

O.A.R. don’t need an art director so much as an overall image consultant. They must be the world’s most unknown famous band. Their string of more-weird-than-terrible surreal cover art portrays them as a probably unlikable but potentially interesting heavier concept prog band. Spoiler alert: No. Their bland ‘90s pop mixed with bland ’00s production values falls somewhere in between Christian Top 40 and Dave Matthews fronting Train. It’s not too far removed from some of the great radio pop of the ‘90s, minus any semblance of style or soul. Regardless, this sort of cover art is what happens when you don’t have anyone in the room to shoot down the first idea someone comes up with.

That Spare Polaris!
“Mommy, why do we have a Polaris?” Brent asked with his characteristic inquisitiveness.
He asked it approximately 13 times in a row in the span of two breaths with his characteristic Rapid-fire Questioning Urgency.
I was having an out-of-body experience. The pool sweep that runs on a timer and does its best to keep our pool clean is called a Polaris, yes. And because the littles have only recently conquered their fear of it, Brian and I hear about the Polaris quite a bit, answering questions about it almost daily while we take a family dip in the pool.
But we weren’t in the pool; we weren’t even near it. The littles and I were standing outside our local Firestone store, about to go in to see how long the wait would be to have them put a new tire on my car, our minivan whom the littles affectionately named Billy.
(No, I have absolutely no idea why they chose that name. I did encourage them to name the car, thinking that if they attached a name to the car, they might think of the car as not just a car but as a friend, and therefore they’d be less inclined to have a ‘Stomp the Food and Drink into the Carpet As Hard As You Can’ Luau in the back. I was wrong.)
Billy needed a new tire. The evening before, we’d been leaving Gramma and Big Daddy’s house (my folks), and out of nowhere, one of the tires was as flat as west Texas. AAA had come out to put on the spare in the 110 degree heat – I LOVE having a AAA membership for precisely this sort of thing – but of course that was just a temporary fix.
So we ended up at Firestone the next morning, and here was Brent, so focused on his question that we could not go inside to get things started with the tires. And there I was, my mind spinning, utterly mystified as to what he meant.
He kept asking why we had a Polaris ... while he kept staring at the spare tire.
Finally it dawned on me that he meant to be asking me why we had a spare! In his little four-year-old world, the words must have sounded so similar that he defaulted to the one he has said almost every day since the start of the summer.
And so I asked him, “Do you mean ‘why do we have a spare?’, buddy? Why did we have to get a spare tire on Billy?”
“YES! Why do we have a Polaris?” The growing urgency in his voice was laced with an unspoken, “You know, Momma, I love you, but you’re really not very bright sometimes.
