Everyone wins at Nike Track Nationals
EUGENE, OREGON – Its hard to imagine a competition where everyone leaves a winner with a bag full of prizes. Such was the case June 25-27 at the 2nd Annual Nike Track Nationals held at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus, a three-stadium venue where some of the best track and field athletes in the world have competed. Event sponsor, Nike, gave every competitor the red carpet treatment: imagine being shown a locker with your name on it and then being given Nike pants, Nike shorts, Nike shoes, a Nike backpack, keychain, a custom uniform top and bottom and new Nike track spikes. "It was over the top!" exclaimed Great Oak Sprint Coach Ray Luna. Even coaches received new Nike shoes.This prestigious event featured 12 of the best boys and 12 of the best girls teams in the country competing for a national title. Two local powerhouses and regular season rivals in the Southwestern League -- the only league in the nation to send two teams -- represented our area well. Last years defending Nike Nationals Champion, Vista Murrieta Broncos, led by first place finishers Javonte Slater and Bernard Quinn, finished second and newcomer Great Oak High School Wolfpack finished fifth in the nation. In addition, Vista Murrietas girls team ranked 10th in the nation, giving the Broncos the distinction of being the highest ranked combined program in the nation. Great Oak is the only team in the nation to send a girls team to the Nike Cross Nationals (for cross country runners) and a boys team to the Nike Track Nationals in the same year.
Getting to the Nike Track Nationals (NTN) was not easy. For four months prior to the event, thousands of high schools competed in a virtual competition by inputting times and records set at USATF meets. The top clubs in each of eight regions automatically qualified; the next four highest scoring clubs from any region rounded out the twelve team field invited to Oregon. Teams competed in ten track and field events: 100m, 110/100m hurdles, 400m, 800m, mile, long jump, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus throw. These marks were scored in decathlon fashion with performance marks awarded a point score. Each team was allowed to drop their lowest scoring event with their total score the sum of their best nine events. This type of scoring favors the best all-around team. Last year, Vista Murrieta was crowned the best team in the nation, with first place wins by Bernard Quinn and Javonte Slater. This year, the Los Angeles Loyola Track Club took home the crown.
