Hostels In Amsterdam
My summer staycation
Somehow August snuck up on me. The summers seem to go faster each year, especially late summer, when I collect my vacation time into a large block that covers the last full month of the season and allows me time to write, rest, and travel. In recent years, I’m usually both excited -- I have a surplus of free time! -- and scared -- what if I have too much "me" time? While I realize many folks would love to have a similar "problem," I know that without a certain amount of structure, I tend to drive myself crazy, the same thoughts running circuits in my head like hamsters on a wheel. In my twenties and early thirties, I prided myself on being a world traveler, venturing off to exotic places. The fact that I was single and didn’t have a traveling companion didn’t stop me; during those years my curiosity and thirst to see how other people lived trumped my fear of feeling isolated far from home. I traveled to Australia and New Zealand, England and Ireland, and the Scandinavian countries, primarily on my own. I stayed at youth hostels and modest bed and breakfast-style inns, often meeting other young explorers along the way. Having four to eight weeks off allowed me to experience those countries and learn something about their people and cultures.
In my early forties I took another European vacation, but found myself calling my best friend at home, my moods swinging between loneliness and depression and occasional uplift. (I eventually ran up a $400 phone bill). I had moved beyond the youth hostel stage and no longer found it easy to meet travelers and locals along my route. The idea of travel still appealed to me, but the reality of tromping around Paris, London and Amsterdam alone had lost some of its sparkle.
I still have a fairly long list of places I want to visit -- with a friend or partner. In the mean time, I’ve set my sights closer to home. Unlike many of the locals, particularly those in the South End, Beacon Hill and Back Bay, I don’t race to escape Boston in the summer. It seems to me there is a reason -- or many reasons -- tourists flock here in June, July and August. So, in the past week, I’ve played tourist and taken advantage of some of Boston’s treasures, resources I often forget to notice when I’m caught up in my daily routine.
Last Thursday evening I sat in Fenway Park as dusk turned toward night.
