Rome CanalFest a mesh of food, fireworks and fun
By the time judging was complete Friday night, Joelle Currier was confident her raspberry and cream cheese cookies would tickle the judges’ taste buds, declaring her recipe best among the 10 entries at Rome Rotary Canalfest’s cookie baking contest.
After all, grabbing votes through the two entries her mother, Laurie, also put in the contest would ultimately give her household bragging rights for an entire year.
“Presumably, that’s the situation,” the younger Currier said. “They came out pretty good. I had to do some tweaking, but they turned out better than I was expecting.”
Ultimately, the Currier household was bested by a concoction submitted by Taylor and Sydney Brewer, of Rome, that melds chocolate chips and snickerdoodles into a confectionery hybrid.
“I saw a lot of people putting in their number,” said Jackie Corbett, rotary food contest chairwoman.
Corbett said this is the first year festival participants were given the power to judge entries. The 10 plates of cookies submitted this year were “fairly consistent” with the participation of other years. The cookie contest is perennially the most popular food contest.
This weekend, the festival at Bellamy Harbor Park also will include a watermelon seed spitting contest, hot dog eating contest, chips and dip contest, and a few others. The event continues Saturday and Sunday.
“Last year, we had some people show up ready to dance for our salsa contest,” Corbett said. “It wasn’t quite what we were thinking, but we had a good time with it.”
Event chairman Jim Donovan said the festival also will include fireworks each night. An inaugural photo contest will take place in the barn and includes more than 100 entries.
“It really far exceeded expectations,” he said. “We’re already planning to bring it back next year.
