A 2006 assessment by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) found that over 2100 humpback whales are present in British Columbia waters, an average population increase of about 4% per year! This increase has lead COSEWIC to change the population status of humpback whales to a lower risk category from "threatened species" to "species of special concern".
