New upgrades for Auburn Fire Department's training facility
AUBURN, Mass. - Last week, the Auburn Fire Department debut its latest training tool, a new basement fire prop at their training facility on West Street.The prop, constructed by several firefighters over several months is a 20 foot metal container retrofitted with a bulkhead, concrete floor and ceiling to protect it from high temperatures. The prop allows firefighters to simulate entering a basement fire by descending a set of stairs through the bulkhead. Inside the basement temperatures can reach 500 to 600 degrees on the floor and 1,000 degrees at the ceiling.
The basement fire prop is one of many additions to the training facility during the past year. Chief Stephen M. Coleman Jr. and Fire Department Training Officer Stephen Lemieux are extremely happy about the new equipment.
"Our department is extremely proud of what this training facility has grown to and every member takes an extreme amount of pride in what we have built," Coleman said.
Additional props include a dumpster, motor vehicle and a propane tank in the drill yard. All of the items are propane fed so they can ignite and simulate fires. The control center to run the propane fed props are placed on a large container that is located on the training site for storage. The operator of the props has a full view of the prop and the firefighters during the training.
Inside the training tower a new entanglement prop has been added to the fourth floor of the building. The purpose of this prop is to intentionally entangle firefighters so they can learn how to rescue themselves from various situations.
"There are many entanglement hazards that firefighters face in commercial and residential properties", Lemieux said.
"Electrical wires, data wire, metal wire that hang drop ceilings, all things that under normal conditions are harmless, in a fire situation when it's hot, dark and full of smoke and these things are hanging from partial collapse they could trap or entangle firefighters. These situations are extremely dangerous and we have to train for them".
The new outdoor classroom provides firefighters a place to sit and rest during the training evolution. The area is equipped with a dry erase board where each evolution can be reviewed.
Chief Coleman thanks the local DPW for assisting in some of the landscaping at the property during the past several years.
