Sox Drawer: Chuck answers the Sox Inbox
By Viciedo, are you referring to Dayan Viciedo , also known as The Tank, the phenom, and the answer to all your prayers?
Never heard of him.
Seriously, Viciedo is a beast, and will be the White Sox future right fielder. But if you haven’t noticed lately, Dayan is having some hitting problems of his own right now in Triple-A. Since coming back from a thumb injury (which might not be 100 percent healed) he is 1-for-17 with 5 strikeouts. He’s batting just .168 since July 1.
That said, he is a man among boys down in Charlotte. When I asked Alejandro De Aza about Viciedo last week, his eyes lit up. He says Viciedo has become a much better hitter, and has shown greater discipline at the plate. He has 35 walks, compared to just 13 in the majors and minors last year. And his arm in right field? De Aza actually compared him to two-time Gold Glove winner Raul Mondesi. Seriously. Of Viciedo, De Aza said, “Don’t run on him.”
But until the Sox can expand their roster on September 1, the Sox have nowhere to put him.
Which leads us to...
We are running out of words to describe the lost season of Adam Dunn , who is on pace to break the record for the lowest batting average in modern baseball history.
That’s quite a sentence to type right there.
The number he has to beat is .179, owned by the Tigers Rob Deer for his forgettable (and yet quite memorable) season of 1991.
How do the two compare?
On this date in 1991, Deer was batting .183. Right now Dunn is batting .163.
Gulp.
But despite Deer’s sunken batting average, he still had 22 homers and 53 RBIs at this point of the season. Dunn currently has 11 homers and 39 RBIs.
Big Gulp.
So what should the White Sox do?
Back in June, a former big leaguer suggested to me that the Sox should put Dunn on the “phantom DL” with a back injury, send him to the team’s spring training site, and have him literally start over. In the meantime, you bring up Vicedo (who was hot at the time), have him split DH and RF duties with Carlos Quentin , and bring Dunn back for the second half of the season, when the Sox really need him.
Sounded like a great plan then. Sounds like a genius one right now.
But here we are two months later, Dunn is still struggling, and so is the White Sox offense. What will the Sox do? My guess is they will just ride him out until Sept.

The Buehrle situation is definitely a big question mark. He hasn't come out and said it recently, but my guess is he wants to keep playing, especially after the season he's having. The question for the Sox is, will they slash payroll? And if they do,

Miles: This movie raises questions. Humans want an answer for everything; fate, religion. If there is an answer for everything, there is such a thing as asking too much. Trying to create your own answers can cause as much harm as good.
Well, with a little bit of research and a phone call, I got my answers. The full name of the school is Martensdale-St. Mary's High School. It is named after two adjoining cities just south of Des Moines, Iowa. It is not a private parochial school.

So it's ridiculous that Skyler would demonstrate nerves of steel and an incredible capacity for fibbing, but it's not implausible that a formerly milquetoast chemistry teacher would reveal himself as a secret badass, capable of confronting and

I thought we were all in. Our attitude is very good, chemistry remains very strong, and we're looking forward to the future. So with that I'll open it up to questions. Q. Heading into camp, what is your biggest concern about your football team?

Polymer chemistry has contributed to clothing technology by providing man-made polymers to replicate or replace natural polymers such as silk, cotton, wool, etc. Dr. Wallace Hume Carothers (et al.) invented most of the synthetic polymers used in clothing today, including neoprene (wet suits), nylon (panty hose), and polyester (you name it), while working for DuPont in the 1930s. Dr. Carothers was trying to make artifical rubber when he created neoprene; artificial silk was his intention when he invented nyon, which was a milestone to the creation of polyester. Aramid fibers, such as Kevlar and Nomax, made the bullet-proof vest (Kevlar) and truly fire-proof suits (Nomax) possible. These were invented by Stephanie Kwolek.
Dye chemistry has also contributed to clothing technology by providing synthetic molecules that equal or surpass natural chromophores. Chemists had to invent a new class of dyes (disperse dyes) in order to permanently add color to the new hydrophobic polymers suitable for making garments, primarily for polyester.
Chemistry continues to contribute to clothing technology today, primarily through surface science and nanotechnology. Products like CoolMax and GoreTex work by transporting moisture (sweat) away from the body, because the surface of the fibers or membranes has been chemically changed.
Chemists have been trying to imitate lotus leaves for a long time because they are the most hydrophobic natural surfaces known. They are so hydrophobic that an angle of 10 degrees in any direction is sufficient to cause even tiny droplets of water to roll off, and carry dirt particles away in the process. In other words, lotus plants clean themselves! Imagine an umbrella or raincoat made from such a material (not a coating that would wear off). You wouldn’t have to hang them up and wait for several hours for them to dry. You just shake them and the water drops fall off immediately, carrying dirt particles in the process. If you search for “artificial lotus leaf”, you will see that such materials will probably become available to the public soon.
