Redlands Unified School District Board of Education Meets Tuesday

The first meeting of the Redlands Unified School District Board of Education for the 2011-12 school year will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Brad Mason, director of human resources, will give a presentation on the impact of volunteerism in California public schools. Superintendent Lori Rhodes will give a report, as well as a legislative update.

Business services consent items include approving a student meal services agreement between Redlands Unified School District and Bear Valley Unified School District; approving students from Arroyo Verde Elementary School to attend Cedar Crest Outdoor Science School in the San Bernardino Mountains, at the invitation of the Orange County Department of Education; and approving the parent organization/booster club application of the Citrus Valley Soccer Boosters at Citrus Valley High School. 

The sole item on the business services action agenda is authorizing staff to revise the Adopted Annual Budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year. At the Redlands Unified School District’s special board meeting on July 20, the board approved the restoration of two furlough days and two staff development days for the fiscal year, thus the adopted budget must be revised to increase the increase in revenues and expenses.

Educational services consent items focus on several excursions for district students, including approving 33 Chamber Singers and 45 Les Chanteuses members from Redlands High School to travel by bus to a retreat in Angelus Oak this month; approving 17 members of Redlands High School’s Masquers Theater Arts Group to travel to Big Bear this month; approving the Chamber Singers to travel to a competition at New York City’s Carnegie Hall in March of 2012; and approving the members of Les Chanteuses to travel to a national competition in San Antonio, Texas in late March of 2012. 

Community members are allowed to address the Board of Education during each meeting, provided they submit a completed registration card to the clerk prior to the beginning of the meeting. Speakers must announce their name and address when it is their turn, and are limited to five minutes.

For a little gorgeous fun, hop on Ebbetts Pass eastbound for about 45 minutes. The drive takes you through the western part of Stanislaus National Forest park — past Calaveras Big Trees State Park and White Pines Lake, just before you would arrive at Lake Alpine — for some incredible scenery as you wind your way down Highway 4. Once you hit Highway 207, you’ve hit your destination — Bear Valley Ski Resort.

Mt. Reba gets a natural snowfall average is 359″ (30 feet) annually, and Bear Valley’s advanced snowmaking system covers a network of runs served by 9 lifts; beginner through advanced terrain; blankets 795 vertical feet; approximately 100 acres of coverage. With an elevation ranging from 6600 to 8500 feet, skiers are rewarded for their efforts by fantastic views of the the lower bowl and the surrounding area. There are 67 trails (25% beginner, %40 intermediate and %35 advanced) withing 1280 skiable acres. Lift tickets and season passes are on the less expensive side, comparatively, and crowding is typically not an issue, so even for the most novice of skiers, there is plenty of space to tackle the sport. Nice, right?

Even during the summers, the resort offers an incredible amount of activities. Adventure getaways are offered for rock climbers and mountain bikers, and there are some fantastic summer camp opportunities (which include a lacrosse camp and a cycling camp). The resort’s summertime offerings also include tennis, kayaking, swimming, volleyball, golf and soccer.

As far as lodging goes, there is a plethora of lodges, cabins, hotels and vacation rentals to choose from between Murphys and the ski area (if you just can’t muster the strength and will to drive 45 minutes back to Murphys) and, while the lodge offers a nice little cafe, you’ve also got plenty of dining options in the area (coffee shops, saloons, diners, you name it). Nearby Bear Valley Village houses a number shops and restaurants, as well, for those who need a break from the slopes.

Its location makes it one brilliant extended-weekend getaway, thanks to its proximity to …well …just about everything!
