Wanderlust: A festival of mind, body, spirit and music

OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. — Touted as a “4-day yoga throwdown,” the third annual Wanderlust Festival at Squaw Valley USA, July 28-31, wove together inspiration and Sierra mountain elements. Creeks tumbled crystalline positive ions into a summer greened valley, the earth and air embracing thousands of attendees. Wanderlust is about stretching the mind, the body, the spirit. The Village at Squaw Valley was transformed with tented global wares, from High Chi jewelry, leather, feather and international crafts. Village Anusara at the base of KT-22 sprouted a bamboo meditation pavilion, purple fabric tiers shading alters of crystal, bronze Indian gods, goddesses, pillows and rugs. The Manduka aerial rig invited lofty, experiential movement. Massage, gong energy alignment, henna tattoos revitalized and decorated lithe limbs and torsos. The crowd poured throughout Squaw Valley, including the swimming pool and spa at High Camp, a retreat at 8,200 feet. The Desert Dwellers, a band performing “music beyond borders,” issued forth mellow yoga dub tracks poolside. Yoga and acrobatics filled the intensely blue swimming lagoon and adorned the islands, with the ubiquitous hula hoops and free-form dance spilling onto surrounding rocks and slopes. The lyrical sweetness amped up with performances by Michael Franti and Spearhead, The Wailers and Girl Talk. The March Fourth Marching Band romped into the Village and on stage, a combo of festooned stilt dancers, drums, saxophones, trumpets in an eclectic mix of music both Dixieland and marching band, rocking messages of “joy now” and love.
