My parents, Thelma and Herb Ding, bought into the Edwards Store and Post Office in July 1957, and we lived there until 1966. The store and post office were in the old fashioned two-story log building that was razed a few years ago after being used to store plumbing supplies for Jack Kemp's business. It was located at 34129 U.S. Highway 6, right next to today's Gashouse restaurant. When we moved to Edwards, prior to Vail's coming into being in 1962, the city signs were almost back-to-back in the sense that all there was to the “town” was the store, post office, and, next door, was the restaurant and gas station that has become the Gashouse restaurant today. Our business came from the surrounding ranches. We lived upstairs, and the store, with the post office, still contained all of the old-fashioned furnishings from when it was built in 1929. (The only correction I would make on Jean Winthers' 1998 Vail Daily article — http://bit.ly/n0vv1Q — is that we did not have an old-fashioned crank phone. We had the black, rotary, phone that was typical for the 1960s. The picture Jane had of the inside of the store was from when Mary and Cliff Thomas had built the store in 1929. That crank telephone had belonged to them.) My mother hosted 35 post office boxes, which are currently in the Eagle museum, compared to the 8,000 boxes Edwards has today. Also, in those days, the restaurant would serve up chile and hamburgers — unlike the lobster the Gashouse serves today! The reason I was so interested in your article, is because, as a child in the 1960s, my family used to, occasionally, stop and visit with Ellis Bearden at his ranch on Squaw Creek, which is now Bearcat Stables. I rode his horses. (Bearcat was Ellis' nickname during his amateur boxing days.) Ellis would serve up hamburgers from his wood stove, that's now located in the Eagle museum. We would call those burgers, “Bearcat Burgers.” Plus, he would make his special “fried papas” in bacon grease!  Sometimes my family would take a picnic further up on Squaw Creek, and my mother would make us hamburgers complete with her juicy garden-raised tomatoes and lettuce, not to mention we might finish off the meal with some of her homemade pie or cake. We'd invite Ellis — with his pickup truck and horses — to those picnics. Sometimes, we'd go all the way to a small lake with a beaver dam, which may not be in existence today.
