March Field Air Museum illustrates local Air Force connections
Editor's note: This is part of a series of profiles of local museums that feature military history.
Southern California is generally associated with the Navy and Marines. While that's understandable, given the large presence of both services in the area, the Air Force ---- and, before that, the Army Air Corps ---- also has a long-standing and significant presence in the region.
The March Field Air Museum captures much of the region's Air Force history. (The Air Force Flight Test Center Museum at Edwards Air Force Base near Lancaster documents another side of Southern California's role in Air Force history.) Situated on March Air Reserve Base in Riverside, the sprawling museum has interior exhibits and dozens of retired aircraft outside.
From restored and replica World War I wood-and-canvas biplanes up through very recent high-tech jet aircraft, the planes at the March museum provide an up-close experience of how much the scale of aviation changed in just a century.
In the years immediately after Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved powered controlled heavier-than-air flight, the technology didn't change much. The propellers were (mostly) moved out front, and control and stability were achieved by ailerons rather than the wing-warping the Wrights relied on, but the technology wasn't much altered by the end of World War I.
By the time World War II came along (and the museum has everything from a rare P-39 Airacobra fighter to B-17 and B-29 heavy bombers), metal had largely replaced wood as the construction material of choice. The post-war era brought perhaps the greatest expansion of aviation technology, with jets pushing us to the outer reaches of the atmosphere.
Among the highlights of the Cold War exhibits are not only an SR-71 Blackbird spy plane (the San Diego Air & Space Museum also has an A-12 Blackbird, the SR-71 precursor, on display), but also the much rarer and less-well-known Blackbird unmanned drone, the D-21. Looking like a miniature SR-71 or A-12, the D-21 could fly at Mach 3.5 and achieve an operational ceiling of 95,000 feet.
Taking a rather egalitarian approach to aviation history, the March museum also contains several Navy and Marine Corps aircraft (including an F-14 Tomcat) and a Coast Guard flying boat of recent vintage.
The museum also has a retired B-52, and a half-dozen massive transports and tanker planes ---- which, unless you've seen them fly, are near-impossible to imagine airborne.

"Laureano has a real ability to bring the museum to the schools." But the museum's real advantage is its volunteers, Mier said. One, Pat Sutherland, watched the 1937 landing of a Russian plane making the first nonstop flight over the North Pole.

The timing of our visit to the Southern Museum of Flight in Birmingham, Alabama, couldn’t have been better. The grand opening of a new exhibit and diorama was set for this evening. The exhibit, The Vietnam War Helicopters, was the star of the event that included a symposium, music, and light hors d’oeuvres. Nearly 400 Vietnam veterans and their families attended the gala. The exhibit features two aircraft – a Bell AH-1 Cobra and a Hughes OH-6 Cayuse. The OH-6 Light Observation Helicopter was nicknamed “Loach”. The exhibit depicts the true story of Troop C, 6
We started our tour at the outdoor exhibit area, located two blocks west of the museum. The 22 aircraft making up the outdoor exhibit are on the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (KBHM). Airport security fence prevents up-close viewing. A rare A-12 Blackbird is among the display aircraft.
We then moved to the museum proper. Four wings in an X-shape house the museum’s 68,000 square foot facility. A unique feature of the museum is its dioramas. In addition to the new Vietnam Helicopters, dioramas depict the history of the Tuskegee Airmen, defection of Lt. No Kum Soc (Korea), and the Lake Murray B-25. Another diorama about crop-dusting is in the planning stages.
The museum has many opportunities for youngsters. They provide four different Alabama School Course-of-Study Tours and workshops for both Girl and Boy Scout badges. In addition, a classroom for hands-on work and a 70-seat theater are available.
A little off the beaten path, you’ll need to closely follow the plentiful signs directing you to the museum, or use a GPS. A nice aviation museum.
