Leaders Analyze Direction Of USF Poly

Conversations about that possibility have been electric with feeling — those in favor of a split are clearly highly enthusiastic about the prospect. And if a local contingent gets its way, USF Polytechnic, now part of the USF system, may wind up independent.

Sen. J.D. Alexander, R-Lake Wales, the state Senate budget chief, is already calling it Florida Polytechnic.

When Gov. Rick Scott approved the $35 million budget item in May for USFP's new campus, he said the university will focus on the important high-tech fields of the future.

"The polytechnic concept ensures that graduates in degree programs outside of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) areas will have training and education in those areas and develop skills applicable to the 21st-century economy," he said then.

Public conversations about the possibility of the college being independent began in late July, when interested community and business leaders started circulating a letter that does three things:

Outlines benefits of an independent university and asks for such.

Discusses drawbacks to staying within the USF system.

Asks the board of governors to hear views supporting separation.

So far, 30 people have signed the letter, addressed to Ava Parker, chairwoman of the board of governors of the State University System of Florida.

The board has asked USFP Chancellor Marshall Goodman and USF President Judy Genshaft to appear at its September meeting in Miami to discuss the issue.

Once the letter became public, Alexander, local businessman Brian Philpot and former state Sen. Rick Dantzler have talked openly about the idea and their desire to see it come to pass.

Lakeland Mayor Gow Fields and City Manager Doug Thomas have recently shared their thoughts, explaining why they declined to sign the letter supporting the split.

Before the letter was sent to Parker last month, many say the topic was being discussed privately among interested parties.

But USF Poly's official stand has said there was no intent to be independent. In a document titled "USF Poly FAQs," revised in April 2011, the following questions are raised and answered:

Separate accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) allows USF Poly autonomy to develop programs that support its unique mission within the USF system.
