Thurs. Debate, Straw Poll Prep, and Perry (and Wisconsin Recalls)

It’s August! The default is averted. Congress is on vacation and the FAA is up and running. That means it’s time to pay full attention, once again, to the presidential race.

This coming week showcases Iowa and the importance of that state in picking a Republican presidential nominee, and this year in particular -- an anti-Romney. 

But First, Don’t forget the Recall

Six Republican state senators face recall elections in Wisconsin next week (remember that shutdown?) 2 Democrats face recalls the week after. $30 million has poured into the state for a local recall election when most people are probably at the lake. Debate Day

There is a GOP debate sponsored by Fox News, the Washington Examiner newspaper and the Iowa Republican Party next Thursday beginning at 9 p.m. ET. Even Romney, who is largely bypassing the state on the campaign trail, will spend time in Iowa in advance of the debate. Michele Bachmann and Tim Pawlenty will be crisscrossing the state. Rick Santorum continues his family caravan (all 7 kids included). Ron Paul has a bus tour, so does Herman Cain.

Romney and Huntsman and the rest of the cast take part in the debate. Romney and Huntsman leave town before the Straw Poll. It is not so much an indication of who has the most support in the state as it is a test of infrastructure and organization. The story line at the straw poll and in Iowa next week is Bachmann v. Pawlenty.

Remember – debates can make a difference. It was her appearance in New Hampshire that began Bachmann’s rise.
