Pony team eliminated at Zone Tournament
The Boy's Pony team, ages 13-15, sent its all-star team to Bay City, Mich., along the banks of Saginaw Bay. With temperatures ideal for baseball the Pony boys arrived last Wednesday night in Bay City and participated with teams from Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana in a home-run derby before starting tournament play. Tournament play consisted of two pools with each team playing three games. The top two teams from each pool would face off on Sunday with the winner advancing to Washington, Penn., to play in the Pony League World Series. Murphysboro met the northern Illinois team from Crest Hill for their first of three games. Crest Hill jumped out to any early lead scoring one run in the first, three in the second and another in the third making the score 5-0. In the bottom of the third the Murphy bats would come to life. Noah Baird would lead off with a double and Dontriel Barnes would draw a walk. With runners at first and second Luke Brunaugh would knock a double into the left center gap scoring Baird. Landon Harris would then hit a sacrifice fly bringing in Barnes. Darryl Murphy would do the same to drive in Brunaugh, bringing the score to 5-3 Crest Hill. Murphysboro's bats would fall silent after that, getting just one more hit. Crest Hill would bang out seven more hits, beating Murphy 17-3. On Friday, Murphy would play Bay County. The game started with Barnes doubling. Barnes would steal third and score on a past ball by the Bay County pitcher. Bay County would answer with one of their own in the bottom of the first. Bay County would score four more in the second. Barnes would get things started again in the third being hit by a pitch. Brunaugh hit a double into the right center gap scoring Barnes. That would be the last hit the Murphy boys would muster against Bay County going down in five innings, 12-2. Central Michigan would come out and get out to an early one run lead. Going into the bottom of the second down 2-0 the Murphy bats would come to life against Central Michigan. Colin Clendenin would get Murphy started with a single and Cody Clover would step up and knock one over the left field fence tying the game, and breathing new life into Murphy. Then, with two outs Austin Helfrich hit a double. Noah Baird followed with an infield single, and Barnes would knock those two base runners in with a double. It would then be Landen Harris' turn as he hit a two run shot over the right field fence. Brunaugh would do the same to the Central Michigan pitcher, hitting a home run to dead center. Murphy would score seven in the second inning. Murphy would score again in the third with two outs when Baird drove in Helfrich, and again in the fourth with Clendenin driving a double down the third baseline to knock Brunaugh, who had reached on a single, in. Cody Clover would hit his second home run of the day in the sixth giving Murphysboro a commanding 10-3 lead. With this being the last day of pool play and every team fighting to advance the Central Michigan boys would not toss in the towel so easily. After six solid innings on the mound Murphy pitcher Landen Harris would come out in the seventh. Cody Clover would come in and get rocked for six hits and give up two walks with the Central Michigan boys scoring six earned and one unearned run tying the game in the seventh. Darryl Murphy would finish out the inning for Murphysboro. Central Michigan would shut down Murphysboro in the seventh sending the game into extra innings. Clendenin would come in to finish the game for Murphysboro. The inning started well with an out to left fielder Brent Mezo. But Central Michigan would rally getting a infield hit. Clendenin would strike out the next batter but then give up a double that scored the go ahead run. Mezo would come up short making a diving attempt in left with the ball coming out as he hit the ground. This would bring in another before Clendenin got the Michigan batter to hit an easy grounder to Landen Harris at short to end the inning. Now with their backs to the wall it was the Murphy boys feeling the pressure. Brunaugh would draw a walk and Darryl Murphy would reach on an error. Clendenin would also draw a walk loading the bases. Brunaugh would use his speed to score on a past ball cutting the lead by one. Clover would draw a walk and Central Michigan would walk Mezo, scoring Darryl Murphy. Central Michigan would get Austin Helfrich to hit an infield pop-up or their first out. With their infield in hoping to get the out at home, Baird would hit a single driving in the winning run. While a trip to the world series was everyone's wish, it wasn't to be for the pony boys. Finishing with a 1-2 record the tournament was a good experience for the players. Boys that attended the Zone Tournament were Noah Baird, Dontriel Barnes, Luke Brunaugh, Colin Clendenin, Cody Clover, Michael Crane, Landon Harris, Austin Helfrich, Brent Mezo, and Darryl Murphy. The Pony boys were coached by Pat Harris and Darryl Murphy.Baseball Tournaments In Indiana - News
