Lost in translation
Oral traditions convey a lot more than printed and digital versions, for the latter fail to capture the depth of feeling that characterise Bhakti poetry — which is a spontaneous burst of emotional and spiritual expression. We bring you an excerpt from Andrew Schelling's book in which he discusses six features that indicate what goes on in a bhakti poem.
The poem...has been composed orally, sometimes spontaneously. Only later has it been written down. Frequently, its models — sources of inspiration or of musical or metrical form — were local folk traditions. The full range of vocal sound may be employed along with instrumental music. The poem is to be recited, intoned, sung, and chanted. No two presentations will sound the same....
A highly developed process of thinking in images. Often these images are built on polarities, or held tense by conflict. Contradiction, illogicals are built, non-casual thought — all are techniques deliberately used by the poet. Narrative comes in bright, sharp image, and personal cries, not through plot or storytelling. Consistent emotions are rarely held. 'You say I contradict myself? Very well, I contradict myself ( Walt Whitman ) would be familiar to the bhakta....'A minimal art of maximum involvement. 'Intensity.' Meaning emerges in the poet's passion and fierce involvement in the art; hence romantic, not classical. The poem transfers its energy through conviction and the poet's personal white-hot experience of reality, not through rules of composition or delicate reworking of known themes. Honesty preferred to eloquence....
These are public 'events'. The poet creates a theatre of participants, willing or unwilling. The poem implicates — pulls — the listener into its world. The 'world' is an alternative society, governed by love, not law. Hectoring, proselytising, vows and oaths, fierce confrontation is not to make enemies but to draw the slothful or reluctant into relationship with the poet's alternative society.
