Bosque Farms Fair marks 72nd year

Since 1939, the residents of the village have turned out for some good old-fashioned family fun and this year promises to be more of the same.

Bosque Farms Fair Association President Cathy Sifford said many of the events and features of the fair are big draws for kids. The ever-popular toad races start at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5, with registration between 4 and 6 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 6, the money pit opens at 10 a.m., Sifford said.

"Rick Eisen, a local CPA, brings the money every year for the pit," Sifford said. "The kids love it. And it's just for the kids. No grown-ups — sorry."

And if you are interested in more cash, there's a greased pole to climb at 11 a.m. on Saturday. There's money at the top for the one who can keep a grip, Sifford said.

There will be jumpers and a duck pond along with food, food, food, Sifford said. Vendors expected this year are Sopa's Restaurant, Hot Diggity Dawg and Papa Hank's BBQ.

Another hit with children and adults alike is the annual parade on Saturday. Line up begins no sooner than 8 a.m. at the intersection of South Bosque Loop and Margaret Drive.

The parade, which starts promptly at 8:30 a.m., will follow the loop around to the arena. Trophies will be given for commercial, best float motorized, political, equestrian, tractor and judge's award.

After the parade, there will be some lively foot races, the rolling pin throw and a horseshoe pitching contest.

And starting at 2 p.m. is the annual live auction, Sifford said. The auction is important to the fair not only because it gives folks a chance to get some great merchandise from local businesses, but because the money raised keeps the fair going year after year, she said.

"The money we raise through the auction is to pay for the fair the next year," Sifford said. "We usually raise about $2,000. I know this year might be tough for some people, but we really want to encourage people to bid and businesses to donate items if they can."

So far this year, items donated for the auction include three months of dance classes at All Star Dance Academy, windshield repair at Bosque Auto Glass, a gift basket from Arrow Animal Hospital, $300 in advertising space from the Valencia County News-Bulletin and market baskets of home grown produce.
