No one likes to fire an employee although sometimes, by the time the termination meeting occurs, enough bad feelings have made the process easier. It’s not easy to stay professional when you watch an employee skate on the edge, sluff off on his work, and use and abuse the employer’s time for personal business. But every employee deserves a wakeup call and a chance to improve. So, it’s important to have and follow a consistent process that uses counseling and progressive discipline before you fire an employee. But when the time comes, because a termination meeting can be intense and emotions often run high, a follow-up letter of termination is essential.
